Creating Opportunities for Adults with Disabilities

Jobs mean so much more than a paycheck. They generate pride, enhance life skills, and create opportunities for socialization. However, adults with disabilities face higher levels of unemployment and are significantly more likely to be left out of the labor force entirely than those without.

To address this disparity, and to support their brother Kevin, who lives in a residence for people with developmental disabilities, Chris and Jim McCann were inspired to create Smile Farms as a nonprofit organization to help provide meaningful work opportunities for differently abled adults.

The first Smile Farms campus opened in 2015 on Long Island, NY. Since then, hundreds of “Smile Farmers” have honed their skills working at farms, urban gardens, greenhouses, and farm stands while growing and selling flowers, plants, and produce in their local communities. The company has supported Smile Farms since inception, and our employees volunteer their time to fundraise for Smile Farms and to garden alongside the farmers.

Fighting Hunger in America

Today in America, as many as 1 in 6 children could be living with hunger.* To address this, our company has partnered with No Kid Hungry, helping ensure our nation’s children are fed. By engaging our customers in fundraising campaigns, we’ve provided up to 1.5 million meals to children in need.**

The company also regularly donates items to food banks across the country. In 2021, we donated nearly $6 million of perishable product to local nonprofits that provide direct assistance to families facing hunger.

BloomNet has a robust scholarship and research underwriting program that gives back to the floral industry. Through donations to the industry over more than a decade, the brand has donated over $100,000 to create state-level and national scholarships to support the careers of budding florists as well as to provide an endowment to help fund floriculture research efforts.

The Teresa McCormick Center (TMC) is located on our Harry & David campus and traces its origins, and its name, to a former Harry & David employee whose compassion led her to collect items for fellow employees in need. This nonprofit serves as a resource center that educates, assists, and connects those in need throughout Oregon’s Rogue Valley and we are pleased to support TMC with ongoing donations and volunteerism.

Summer of a Million Smiles Volunteer Program

Every year, team members across the country participate in our Summer of a Million Smiles volunteer program. From June through August, employees give back to causes about which they are passionate. Employees have volunteered at food pantries and animal shelters, taught children with autism how to surf, cleaned up beaches, participated in wheelchair basketball games, and more.

When disaster strikes, the company responds swiftly to help our employees, our partners, and our communities.

We made it a priority to help and celebrate frontline workers across the country with donations to hospitals, food banks, and more – providing more than $1 million in product donations from our food brands to aid local communities. And we worked with local florists to create hundreds of bouquets to thank hardworking heroes as part of our Local Heroes campaign.

In 2020, wildfires left a devasting path of destruction in Oregon, including near our Harry & David campus in Medford. Our Harry & David team worked together with local residents to donate essential items and more. We donated food to first responders and opened our facilities to serve as a satellite headquarters for local authorities and FEMA. Nearly 100 of our team members’ homes were destroyed. In response, the company created an employee assistance fund, matching contributions from associates across the country and generating approximately $300,000 for team members in need.

We are proud to support our network of BloomNet florists. In response to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, BloomNet matched donations made by its member florists, raising nearly $60,000. The brand also donated supplies and equipment to help impacted shop owners get their businesses up and running again. BloomNet has since worked with the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) and its foundation to help establish the AIFD Foundation Catastrophic Fund, matching member florist donations dollar-for-dollar in crisis situations.
