At 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Inc., more than half of our employee population are women, and their influence and contributions are felt across our organization every day. One of the ways the women in our organization support each other is through our Women & Allies Employee Resource Group (ERG). Based in Medford, OR, Sheila Smith, Vice President of Enterprise Sourcing and Procurement for our company’s Gourmet Foods and Gift Baskets segment, serves as the leader of this ERG.
Today marks the beginning of Women’s History Month, during which we celebrate the contributions of women to our history, culture, and society. We asked Sheila to share her thoughts on how people can be allies to women in the workforce, the role ERGs play in championing women, and the female leaders who inspire her most.
Q: What are your hopes for what the Women & Allies ERG will accomplish?
A: The mission of our ERG is to “Share and Grow Together.” I hope that collectively we serve as a reminder that we support one another and that we can provide guidance and tools to empower women and allies to approach situations differently with an inclusive mindset.
Q: What role do you think ERGs have in fostering a culture of inclusion?
A: Our members tell us that ERGs provide a sense of belonging and let them know that they are not alone. I believe ERGs also create a community for providing advice and serve as a sounding board for current concerns.
Q: How can women best support and advocate for each other in the workplace?
A: Mentorship does not have to be formal. Setting good examples of leadership can be part of everyday activities. Also, sharing and receiving feedback from a colleague is a powerful way to provide support.
Q: What are meaningful ways that allies can support women in the workforce?
A: People can be allies simply by listening, seeking to understand a person’s point of view, and fully appreciating and valuing the unique perspectives female co-workers bring to the workplace.
Q: What does Women’s History Month mean to you?
A: I view this month as a time to reflect on great examples of heroic characters that have paved the way for past, current, and future women leaders. Many, of course, are not famous, but have made significant contributions that have positively impacted the lives of others.
Q: What female leaders – past or present – have you drawn inspiration from?
A: Honestly, I’ve really been inspired by the members of our Women & Allies ERG leadership team. Their openness and willingness to lead and advise smaller groups within our community is inspiring. They truly care about providing a path for other women leaders.
Thank you, Sheila!
